MoNTUE Library Lobby

国立台北教育大学の図書館は、19世紀フランスの高名な工房による石膏レプリカ像数点を譲り受けた。これらは同大美術館（MoNTUE）の中核コレクションの一部で、ミケランジェロによるルネサンスの名作「Day」をはじめとする著名な彫刻の、レプリカそれ自体が美術館収蔵品となるような質の作品群である。

もともとはニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館に収蔵されていたものを、MoNTUEが開館時にコレクションとして譲り受けており、MoNTUE内部にもその一部は常設展示されている。

今回はその一部を図書館に移すにあたり、MoNTUEの常設展示を行ったnoizに図書館の常設展示の依頼があった。

図書館は近年の改装でかなり「ポップな」色遣いの内装になっており、雑然とさまざまなスタイルおよび要素が混在し、明確な中心を持ち得ていなかった。今回「Day」をはじめとする彫刻作品を設置するにあたり、伝統的な西欧の大学図書館のように、クラシカルな彫刻の台座の周囲にベンチがあり、その構成が施設に明確な焦点を与え、同時に人の動きを誘発するような構成とすることを意図した。

精緻な彫刻とコントラストをなすように、ごくシンプルな円筒形の台座とそれを取りまくドーナツ状のベンチという構成を、同心円状の白黒のリングが囲み、周囲に向かって徐々に色が薄くなっていく構成となっている。

このシンプルながら強烈なコントラストの構成が、フラットで雑然とした周囲に対してソリッドで堅固な印象を与え、明確な中心をもたらしている。一部のストライプはそのまま壁にも延長され、壁から飛び出したテーブルがそれらの流れを分岐させている

The library of the National Taipei University of Education has recently received three plaster statues from MoNTUE, namely Day, Last Judgment – Hell, and Last Judgment – Heaven. These three works are state-of-the-art plaster replicas of renowned Renaissance masterpieces, created by a famous French workshop in the 19th century. They were donated to MoNTUE by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, along with some other replicas that are permanently displayed at MoNTUE. The library also took this opportunity to invite NOIZ to participate in this project, aiming to bring art into the campus and closer to everyday life.

The library interior is full of rich colors to help people distinguish different spaces and functions, making the interior space almost too “pop” with no clear focal point. Therefore, Noiz has designed a simple cylindrical base for the main statue, which contrasts with the richly carved plaster statue. To complement the “pop” surroundings, and in respect of traditional Italian patterns, we have used a simple black-and-white stripe applied in a ripple pattern, trimming the cylindrical bench and gradually fading its color toward the edge. The ripple image is meant to emphasize the new visual focus of the space and to add a greater sense of three-dimensional structure to the otherwise flat space of colors. The display area has become a new focal point of the library, thanks to its strong visual presence and clear contrast with the busy surrounding environment.
